Children have a natural curiosity about all the things around them. It is vital that as a Christian parent, we introduce our children to the Word of God through the Bible. When sharing the Christian stories of the Bible, it is important to put it into language that your children will understand, while still keeping the messages from God intact. With this in mind, how do we explain to our children the story of God creating the heavens and the earth?
This article will help you to tell this story to your children in a meaningful way. What follows is how I shared the story of God and creation with my children.
In the beginning of time, before there were any living beings roaming the earth, there was only God. There was only darkness all over the earth. God spoke and his awesome power filled up the world with all the wonderful things that you now see. He created the moon and the sun, as well as the stars so that we might be able to see. He also created water. He created birds and fish and all other types of animals so that they could put life upon the earth and provide food for the people of the earth.
But people like you and me were not yet created. That would be the very last and most important thing that God would do. Can you name some other things that God might have created? (At this point, make sure that you hammer home the fact that God created everything!)
Can you imagine what the earth must have been like before God created people? There must have been animals all over the place! God had created the flowers of the earth and it was beautiful to look at. God looked out across his creation and thought that it was wonderful. He still felt as though he was not finished yet though. He still had to create men and women.
Finally, God created the first man and woman to place on the earth. They were named Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve lived in a place called the Garden of Eden. This was a wonderful place that God created so that Adam and Eve would have a place to live and start a family.
God was very pleased with everything he had created. Amazingly, God was able to create everything in the world in only six days! What an incredible feat! On the seventh day he rested. This is why we are supposed to rest on the seventh day in worship of God.
This was the point where I left off with my children on this story. Children generally have a short attention span, and you want to keep your stories short and brief. Be sure to interact with your children and allow them to ask questions along the way.
Giving them a solid foundation in the Bible will allow your children to make proper choices as they grow older. It is vital that they know the love of God at a very young age so that they are prepared to make an informed choice about religion when they grow older.
