Hillary Clinton is talking about the idea of Barack Obama being her running mate. Yes Clinton is still behind in delegates, but that doesn’t stop her from thinking. The votes are close, and it could come down to either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama as the Democratic party’s nomination for president. So this begs the question, who would they choose as their Vice President. I think it would be a smart move for either Clinton or Obama to choose the other one as their running mate. Both Clinton and Obama have a lot of support with the voters, and I believe it would make a strong Democratic ticket. So who would be able to handle the duties of Vice president better?
First what are the actual duties of Vice President? Most people don’t know. The only formal powers stated by the Constitution for the Vice President are becoming President in case of death or resignation of the President, and the presiding officer of the US Senate. The other duties while unofficial are also very important. The Vice president acts as an adviser to the president, acts as a spokesperson for administration policy, they might also meet with heads of state or attend events the President can’t be at. Also very importantly the Vice President position is often a jumping off ground for the next Presidential candidate. Of the 13 Presidential elections from 1956-2004 they have all either featured the incumbent President or Vice President. So it is very likely that whoever is is elected Vice President this election we will see again running for President.
So who would make a better Vice President? I think both Clinton and Obama would do excellent on the public service side of it. I think both of them are well liked by the public, and I think they would both do well with the aspect of attending events and meeting with heads of state. I think being charismatic is a very important part of the Vice President position. I think charisma would be a very important factor if the Vice President ever had to take over for the President. If the Vice President had to take over it would most likely be a situation where our country was in a crisis of some sort. If our country was in a crisis we would need a strong leader to be able to take over. While I feel both Clinton and Obama are charismatic, I feel that Obama has a slight edge. I think he would be excellent as a presiding officer for the senate. Although I think it would be pretty even between who would be a better Vice President, I think Obama would be better.
I think that if Clinton wins the Democratic nomination it would be a very smart move for her to choose Obama as her running mate. The interesting thing about this presidential election is that no matter what happens this is going to be a historical election. If McCain wins we will have one of our oldest presidents. If Obama or Clinton win we could have our first black president or our first woman president. I know I am really looking forward to seeing what is going to happen in this very historical election.
