HELLO? Can anybody read? There is a reason for the signs along the highway that read “Slower Traffic Keep Right” but yet it seems that there are not too many people out there that can read. If they can read, then they can’t follow simple directions. Everyday I travel on major highways back and forth to work and if it wasn’t for slow left lane drivers, I would probably arrive at work less stressed. In the 20+ years that I’ve been driving on I’ve come to realize that this will never change. What a shame that it. If slower traffic actually kept right, the rest of us could get to where we are going a lot faster. Now granted, there are days that I don’t have any desire to rush to work or anywhere else for that matter. You will then find me on those days in the middle lane, but I will, at the very least, be going the speed limit. As much as “Slower Traffic Keep Right” means don’t travel under the speed limit in the left lane, it certainly should not be implying to any driver that it is okay to go 10 mph under the speed limit. You will cause major traffic jams if not an accident by doing this. Please people, try to remember that the left lane should basically be used as a passing lane. Once you have an opening in the lane to the right, then move over to allow a faster vehicle behind you to pass, then you can move back into the left lane if you need to contiue to pass cars, then again , MOVE BACK OVER.
One thing drivers should be aware of is that if you are driving in the left lane and someone begins to tailgate you, then once again, MOVE OVER! There is no benefit to you or anyone else on the road if you take it personally and choose to stay right where you are with a vehicle practically performing an internal exam on your car. Let me ask you this? What does that get you? Now you’ve slowed down because the person behind you has made you angry and you figure “I’ll show them.” You are endangering the lives of everyone else around you by being this stupid. Take the intiative and get out of the lane as safely and quickly as you can, allowing the tailgater to go by. Believe me it’s safer to let them get far away from you and if they are in that much of a hurry, they’ll be out of sight before you know it and you can continue to your destination safely.
Additionally, by driving in the left lane and holding up traffic because you are travelling slower than the traffic to the right, you will eventually be causing someone else to drive aggressively. I should khow. I’ve done it many times myself. Everyday I travel the same highway and everyday it is the same. In fact, it is so backwards that I have to laugh about it. I have to merge onto the highway first (guess what, everyone is in the right lane while traffic is trying to merge in) then once I get onto the highway and we should be moving at the speed limit, everyone then travels in the two left lanes, leaving the two right lanes wide open. So here I am in the left lane and I will have to change two to three lanes to the right just so I can go around the slower traffic. Most times I am travelling a much higher rates of speed in the far right lane than the cars in the far left. Does this make any sense?
And let’s just add as a final note, when there is a merge lane, the vehicles in the right lane should either move over to allow the merging traffic in, or if you can’t move over, then try to pace yourself so merging traffic can slip in………… but that’s a whole different subject. Don’t get me started. I’m already freaking out thinking about getting on the highway when I leave work, but I promise, if you’re behind me, I will move over to let you pass.
