I think the problem of childhood obesity is the fault of parenting and lack of knowledge about dieting.
A short while ago, I heard that some parents were protesting against McDonald’s for having sat in their food and causing their children to become overweight. This is ridiculous. Everyone knows that fast food, like McDonald’s, is not good for you, not only because of the fat but, also, because of the sodium and other large amounts of unhealthy ingredients in fast food.
Parents know that their children should not be eating a large amount of fast food because it is bad for children and adults even if they are not overweight. If their children are overweight, it is an even stronger reason for their children to stop eating fast food.
A minority of parents are always trying to push their weight around with problems concerning society as a whole for their own gains or other purposes. Maybe it makes them feel better then other people.
Parents are always blaming the movie industry, video games, and other forms of media for causing the corruption of their children. They push and push for stronger form of censorship and stricter ratings on movies, so that they are better informed of what to do or not to show their children. I can understand this sentiment and, I believe, that the movie, video game, and other media industries have complied and increase the strictness of ratings that they use. This means that parents are now given more information about what their children see and they are capable of forming fully informed decisions about what their children see.
I mentioned the above because, like the movie industry, parents are also informed about the ingredients in fast food. Parents know what is current and bad for their children and are able to make informed decisions about the children’s upbringing and diet. What more do they want? They have the information, so they should be able to make informed decisions like they want to about the media and other things.
Parents have the information, yet they still blame the fast food and other food industries for their children’s obesity. Like the old quote says, “you can’t have your cake and eating it too.” Parents know what to do, so the responsibility of obesity caused by diet lies with them and no one else.
I have also seen a crazy case where parents were planning on suing Nabisco for its Oreo cookies. Those people said that the cream inside of the Oreo cookie is the reason for their children’s obesity. This is ridiculous. Now, parents are attacking food products that have been sold for almost a century without a problem. I think that it is just a frivolous lawsuit in order to make money and not really to help society.
The only time that I believe obesity is not the problem of the parents is when the children have a medical condition which makes them overweight. There are many medical treatments for obesity, which can help the child lose weight and stay healthy. Parents just need to look for it and actually used the treatments available to them. So, again, the problem should rest with the parents.
Then we have other people who are having a fit when the government becomes involved with their children who are overweight. First, the parents complained that the government is not doing enough to control the food that makes people overweight. Now they are complaining when the government helps them too much. You cannot have it both ways.
