The typical Long Island club can be rather hectic at times, with dizzying lights, pounding music, and crowds populated with individuals seeking drunkenness and debauchery. For something a little less unassuming and a lot more relaxing, while still providing an eclectic mix of welcome entertainment, try the Velvet Lounge in East Setauket, on Long Island, NY.
The Velvet Lounge is a neat little gathering place that has survived triumphantly throughout the years while many other Long Island bars/clubs have opened and closed their doors for good. It isn’t really fair to call the Velvet Lounge a fully equipped dance club; rather, it is more of a bar with an adequate space for dancing.
The intimate decor, complete with velvet couches and chairs for relaxing, along with a somewhat strange arrangement of artwork, works together to achieve a curious mix of comfort and revelry. Being so close to Stony Brook University, the patrons are often comprised of the college crowd, although many members of the Stony Brook faculty have also managed to call the Velvet Lounge home, thus proving that it isn’t age that is a factor here, but rather the unique culture the Velvet Lounge emits.
While it can grow rather crowded when bands or other acts are performing, the crowd itself is usually friendly and laid back. Performing acts usually consist of a regular roster of bands and DJs from Long Island, encompassing everything from reggae and funk to chillout and ambient music. Art shows and other forms of entertainment also frequent the Velvet Lounge. A look at the Velvet Lounge Myspace page or website reveals a calendar of happenings almost every night of the week.
During the summer, an outside patio is also available. Drinks are relatively inexpensive, and beer specials are commonplace. The bartenders are friendly, lacking the haughtiness that accompanies some bartenders at most Long Island dance clubs.
The Velvet Lounge also recently opened another location on Long Island, in Lake Grove. This location also thankfully keeps the same decor theme and exhibits the same welcoming atmosphere. An outside patio exists at the Lake Grove location as well, and the regularly scheduled entertainment is also a unique mix of DJs on various nights.
