Vacations, everyone is excited as summer arrives to take that needed vacation. The definition of a vacation is, Respite from Something (www.encyclopidia.com) We did not always take vacations, in the early 1800’s children were in school approximately 11 months out of every year. Parents were working in the fields or factories and had no place to put their children while at work. They were kept in school for this reason. Not all countries have a shortened school year like the US, Europe, Asia and South America to name a few do not have the shortened school year. (www.info please.com)
The statistics show that the US spends approximately 13 days a year on vacation; Italy 42 days; France 37 days; Germany 35 days; Canada 26 and the U.K. 28 days. You spend approximately 1/3 of your life sleeping and almost 2/3’rds working leaving you little time for family and friends. This is why most of us look forward to vacation.
Most vacationing people spend their entire time doing exciting and interesting things. They will find themselves more exhausted when they return from their vacation than they did before they went. It is not difficult to plan a vacation that is fun, educational and restful.
The Pope stated in his sermon to parishes that vacation is not only for physical rest but for spiritual enrichment to stretch the body and nourish the spirit. That in mind you need to think before you go on vacation this year (www.catholicnewsagency.com).
When we go on vacation we usually eat things that are not good for us and that we usually would not eat at home. This will cause constipation and diarrhea for many, making them more miserable while away and when they return.
When you plan a vacation plan it in a way that allows you a few days of rest. For example, you vacation at Disneyland. You can go to the theme park for the first 2 days, remember you will probably not get back to your motel till late in the evening so these are your excitement days. Now on the third day go to the beach or spend the day around the pool relaxing and having a picnic (don’t forget the sunscreen). You may even want to plan a couple of evenings just watching movies in the motel or even schedule yourself a nice long nap.
When you plan your vacation remember to include exercise. Yes I know running around from place to place seeing the sights is exercise. It is not the kind that refreshes the body however, if your motel has a gym available go there every other evening and walk the treadmill. Not fast, not to accomplish miles and miles of walking but to refresh your body. Also carry water with you and drink lots of clear cool water. This will hydrate your body and keep you fresh while out and about (it doesn’t have to be hot out to drink water).
Food is another problem while vacationing, most people will eat things that they normally would not eat at home. Be sure to pick from the menu those things that are best for you. Not fried, not filled with sugar, making your blood sugar levels rise and fall quickly while vacationing can cause extreme fatigue. You will find you feel better if you stick to your usual eating routine.
When you plan your vacation plan to lessen your stress. Confirm you hotel reservations and your airline tickets. Make sure that you are up to date on the newest and latest regulations for the airline you are flying on. There is nothing more stressful than getting to the airport and being detained because you did not know what you could and could not take on the plane. Be sure to take a few extra dollars as the airlines no longer provide you with a meal in flight. You can purchase one but it is easier for you if you have exact change for that meal. You can take food on the plane with you, but remember the food purchased at the airport is extremely expensive. You cannot however, take any liquid on the plane so be ready to drink what every the airline has to offer you.
Research your destination so you can have some idea of what to expect while you are out and about in this new place to visit.
Most importantly enjoy your vacation and rest along the way. Whatever you plan and where ever you go enjoy your trip and be safe.
