Top Lake Michigan Beaches are a source of great summer time aquatic enjoyment for residents of the state and those who come to Michigan on vacation. For people who see Lake Michigan for the first time it can be quite overpowering. Some even say it reminds them of the first time they saw the Atlantic or the Pacific. The surprising thing about the top Lake Michigan beaches is that it is not just the extensive water that makes you thing you are at the ocean, it is the wonderful lake side dunes, activities and attractions.
Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Hart, Michigan When my daughter first moved to the Chicago area and reported that there were sand dunes on Lake Michigan I really thought she had lost it. But turns out she was totally on target. Along the shores of Lake Michigan you can find scores of beach towns all of which have their own personality and many their own particular draw for tourists. The incredible sand dunes that run between Sliver Lake and Lake Michigan make the Silver Lake Sand Dunes, Hart Michigan one of the top Lake Michigan Beaches. The dunes here stretch for almost 2 miles and are almost a mile wide.
What makes this area great is the accessibility of dune adventures. Oh sure people come here, like any place on lake Michigan to enjoy the water activities but this is the only beach on Lake Michigan where you can walk on the dunes, take a buggy ride on the dunes, even rent or drive your won OSV and park it on the beach and enjoy the day. If you thought discovering Lake Michigan in the middle of the U. S. was quite a sight, just wait until you see Silver Lake Sand Dunes. The basic fee for dune climbing and access is a Michigan State Park Sticker which will cost you $24 for the year or $4 for the day.
Saugatuck . Of course not everyone is hearty enough to want to romp on the dunes. There are other things that attract people to top Lake Michigan beaches. Some seek a coastal area with a small town feel, a high degree of relaxation and most of all a sensitivity to the arts. If that sounds like what you are looking for try Saugatuck on the east coast of Lake Michigan. Certainly there are dunes here and sparkling waters, but those who come here are more apt to paint them then climb them.
For years Saugatuck has attracted artists like a magnet. Perhaps it is the casual atmosphere of the town, its open boardwalk, is quaint shops or naturally, its beach. And of course there are the main art galleries and studios that have sprung up over the years. The attraction for artists is so strong that Saugatuck has
been named one of the 25 top arts destination in the entire nation. So if you like your beach with lots of art on the side, Saugatuck could be your new summer destination.
Harbor Country, Along the shores of Lake Michigan there has been a gradual rejuvenation of a once popular coastal area made up of 8 small communities. Today this area is called “Harbor Country” and it is again attracting tourists as it once did back in the 1920’s and 1930’s. What brings people to Harbor Country is surprisingly not the usual tourist attractions but rather the lack of them. Harbor Country towns offer top Lake Michigan beaches because their beaches are part of a very quiet, undeveloped and peaceful stretch along the Lake. Every year beaches in Harbor Country are named among the top in the state and they do it with basically what nature has provided, great sand dunes and clean, sparkling water.
One special feature for swimmers or those who enjoy a good flop around in the water, Harbor Country does advertise that due to its location it has the warmest waters in Lake Michigan. It’s worth a try!
Grand Haven. When you are named one of the Top Five Beaches in America by Good Morning America-Travel Mom in 2005, you have a reputation to uphold and count on Grand Haven, Michigan to do exactly that. The community here is large enough to offer accommodations and attractions for families or for romantically inclined couples.
Grand Haven has plenty of downtown tourist attractions with art galleries, shopping and even a trolley that will entertain both kids and adults. There is also a rather spectacular boardwalk of some considerable length that will lead you from the downtown area all the way to the great sandy beach and the shores of Lake Michigan. But check out the walk in advance, the full distance can be a little challenging for seniors or children. The kids will love the great and golden beaches that seem to go on forever . Grand Haven has the potential to convince you that the Midwest really does have a beach that has been placed along side of others like Hilton Head and the Virgin Islands.
