Every year 12 contestants make the final round of American Idol. The final 12 is never completely made up of good singers; there have been quite a few bad singers get to the final 12. However, there have been some good singers make the top 12 and they have put on some great performances. Here are the Top 10 performances of all-time on American Idol.
10. Clay Aiken – Build Me Up Buttercup
I will never understand why American Idol contestants will be forced to sing oldies music when they are usually completely horrible at it. Clay Aiken’s version of Build Me Up Buttercup was one of the few performances of an oldies song that sounded good and wasn’t at all cheesy.
9. Kelly Clarkson – Natural Woman
Kelly Clarkson has had possibly the most good performances of any American Idol contestant and was the easy choice to win Season 1. Her best performance came when she sang Natural Woman.
8. Blake Lewis – You Give Love A Bad Name
Blake Lewis was never a great singer but he was a good performer. His beat box version of You Give Love a Bad Name gave a uniqueness we had never seen before (and not in a bad way like Sanjaya.) The beat boxing took Blake all the way to the final two.
7. Katharine McPhee – Over the Rainbow
Some people didn’t like Katharine McPhee’s attitude, especially considering there were many other likable contestants that season but when she sang Over the Rainbow you can’t deny she has a beautiful voice.
6. Carrie Underwood – Independence Day
It seems women are always compared to the singer of the songs they choose more than the men. The American idol women are usually compared to the original singer and just can’t compare. But when Carrie Underwood belted out Independence Day she sounded even better than the original.
5. Taylor Hicks – Takin’ It To the Streets
The Soul Patrol was in full force when Taylor Hicks took the stage to sing Takin’ It To the Streets. Some people didn’t like Taylor’s “dance moves” but it was one of the most energizing performances of all-time.
4. David Cook – Billie Jean
Even though David Cook later admitted that he took the arrangement from somebody else, he still did an original version of a classic song and it sounded good. Some people might think it’s “cheating” but I say kudos to David Cook for finding a better arrangement whatever way he can.
3. Brooke White – Let It Be
A lot of people think that Brooke White’s performances are “boring” but I’ll take somebody who can sing and play piano over somebody that has no talent and sticks around because they scream at the top of their lungs and take more and more clothes off each week.
2. Bo Bice – Drift Away
It’s hard to find a voice that is more perfect for a song than Bo Bice’s voice and Drift Away. Bo has sultry southern rock type of voice that makes you just drift away into the music, like the song says.
1. Chris Daughtry – Wanted Dead or Alive
It still amazes me that Chris Daughtry didn’t win, or even come in the top three when he’s clearly the one star to come out of season five of American Idol. Chris Daughtry had several good performances that season but Wanted Dead or Alive was the one that put him on the map and everyone saw that a star was born.
