Although the classic vampire’s characters are alive (or death, to be more accurate) centuries ago, we can enjoy modern beasts full of fangs in the new movies and books. The fascination that vampires always had caused us was very much increased by Anne Rice and his novels, full of sensuality and fun to read, and their adaptation for the big screen. After “Interview with the Vampire”, plenty of new stories of bloodsuckers came to the bookstores ready to conquer our souls.
It is interesting that many of the main characters of the new novels about vampires are women, strong personality girls that “kick ass” and enjoy their sexuality. They are alive or dead, they are vampires or slayers, and all of they have in common being modern, sexy and strong.
Many people call these new literature “paranormal romance”, but in reality these novels are stories about vampires with some touches of love and a bunch of sex, and they are part of our times, fast, superficial and easy to digest for every stomach.
Anne Rice started the party, and she is the proud mother of a historic series of vampires’ books, “The Vampire Chronicles”. Rice’s favorite son may be Lestat, the sexy and unconventional vampire who delight us in several of her novels, as “Interview with the Vampire”, “Lestat” or “the Queen of the Damn”. Lestat the Vampire has a charming character, and he is fascinated by everything new, as rock and roll and fast cars. He is the vampire we would like to be.
Rice gave birth to several more vampires, as Pandora, a sensitive and strong woman, or Vittorio, consumed by his circumstances. But is Lestat who is still reigning in our hearts.
After Anne Rice, we were blessed with Buffy. “Buffy the vampire slayer” is showing us the vampire action from the opposite point of view. Buffy is a teenager with a gift and all the trouble that that gift causes her. She is a slayer, and the vampires are the bad thing, but she can still feel the attraction of the sexy vamp, and fall in the net of the vampire’s sensuality. Every episode of the show is entertaining and original, even the saddest ones, and there are some of that ones.
From “Buffy the vampire slayer” comes one of my favorite vampires, Angel. The vamp with a soul who was Buffy’s boyfriend enjoyed a show all by himself, and it was very good. Although Angel’s personality is tormented by the fact that he is a vampire and he has to keep the beast inside tamed, he has a good sense of humor, and some of the show’s characters, like Spike, are hilarious.
In the field of the kick ass girls we have some vampire’s books that are fun and sexy. One of the funniest is the Betsy series by Maryjanice Davidson. The main character is a modern girl crazy about shoes names Elizabeth Taylor, and she is not only a vamp, she is the queen of the vampires. Betsy’s outgoing personality and the mix between everyday situations and paranormal stuff makes these novels sure hits.
Another series that became subjects of cult is the Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris. The main character is Sookie, a telepathic waitress in a bar in a little town in Louisiana. She gets herself involved in the vampire’s world after date a vampire, Bill, and she starts helping the boss of the vampires in the area when he realizes her gift. By the way, Sookie doesn’t consider her telepathy a gift but a disability, and she is so naturally honest and sincere that makes us love her. We identify ourselves with Sookie, because her character is realistic and original. The plots in the different novels are interesting, and the paranormal world is complex and well described.
We’ll have soon a TV show based in Sookie adventures, named “True Blood”, as the name of the synthetic blood that vampires consume in Harris’ books, and that will be interesting.
There are many more modern vampires around, but we have to take them in little groups, we don’t want too much in our plate.
