When NBC’s Saturday Night Live fell into reruns, World Wrestling Entertainment took advantage and created the hit program “Saturday Night’s Main Event”. During the eighties this program featured some of the best WWE superstars like Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, and Mr. Perfect. It ended in 1992, but was brought back in 2006 for the current WWE superstars to perform on. Here is a look at some of the best WWE Saturday Night Main Event matches.
Hulk Hogan & Andre the Giant vs. King Kong Bundy & Big John Studd: Most people know Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan as great rivals but before their feud and Wrestlemania III encounter, the two superstars were actually both good guys. This match featured some of the biggest stars at the time and was a great encounter that showed the skills of all of them. The ending was kind of disappointing with a double disqualification, but the match itself was impressive and great to see all of these superstars battle it out in one ring.
Hulk Hogan vs. Paul Orndoff: Orndoff was an on again off again rival of Hulk Hogan and their feud culminated in a Steel Cage match for the WWE championship. This was a good match and what made it even better was the false finish between the two when they both simultaneously hit the ground when they climbed over the steel cage. The match was ordered to be restarted and this time Hogan easily got the victory and retained his title.
Battle Royal: The March 14, 1987 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event featured a huge battle royal with a lot of the rivaling superstars. Two of the biggest superstars in the Battle Royal were Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan. This match took place shortly before their bout at Wrestlemania 3 and showed what an advantage Andre had when he easily disposed of Hogan and eliminated him from the ring. It took eight other wrestlers to get rid of Andre and it was Hercules who gained the victory.
Macho Man Randy Savage vs. Andre the Giant: Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant’s epic feud will always be remembered, but the match between Savage and Andre saw potential for a full feud between the two. This match was just to merely set up the battle between Jake “The Snake” Roberts and Andre though. In this case, Andre the Giant was scared of snakes, and Roberts tried to do anything he could to put one Andre. Just when Savage and Roberts thought they had Andre where they wanted him, he escaped and the feud between the two would continue.
Shane McMahon vs. Shawn Michaels: In 2006, NBC decided to bring back Saturday Night Main Event and this time it featured a whole new roster of superstars including Triple H, John Cena, Randy Orton, and Kurt Angle. Vince McMahon was sick of Shawn Michaels and wanted to dispose of him any way that he could so before he faced him one on one at Wrestlemania 22, he sent his son against him in a street fight on Saturday Night Main Event. These two had an excellent match where they beat the crap out of each other and Shawn Michaels actually put Shane McMahon through multiple tables. Vince ordered the bell to ring though and Shane McMahon was awarded the victory.
As WWE still has a deal with NBC, hopefully Saturday Night Main Event returns featuring great feuds, classic matches, and everybody’s favorite WWE superstars.
