There are very few who will argue that even the most forgettable movie can be made memorable if it has a song that is so catchy, it will stick in your head. And, if the song happens to be performed by a star-studded cast, that only helps the cause.
It’s one thing when that song comes from a movie you expect to have great music in it; like a musical like Hairspray, a Disney cartoon or even a film that stars a singer (like Britney Spears in the movie Cross Roads). But, I’ve found that some of the best musical performances come from non-musicals; simply because they are unexpected and, in some cases, the best part of the whole movie.
Here’s my list of the most memorable of these.
The Banana Boat Song; Beetlejuice (1988) – OK, to be fair, the actors in this movie only lip synched the words to the song. But, I’ve been to quite a few boring dinner parties where I wished some ghost (or ghosts) would possess the people I was dining with and force them to re-enact this scene just to give me a break from the dullness.
The Penis Song; The Sweetest Thing (2002) – The great thing about this performance was I really never saw it coming. You have a bunch of women sitting around the table at a diner in what could be mistaken as a scene out of your typical chick flick. They start talking about men and within moments the entire restaurant is joining them with a hilarious tune about penises. As you can imagine though, this probably isn’t going to be a scene you will want to watch with younger members of your family.
I Say a Little Prayer (for you); My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997) – I actually didn’t even like this movie and thought the idea of the entire cast breaking out into song was a bit forced. But, I will give them this much, the song really does stick in your head. In fact, it’s been going through mine ever since I decided to add this movie to the list.
Y.M.C.A.; Wayne’s World 2 (1993) – Much like in Beetlejuice, the cast members lip synched this song. And, some people may frown on the fact I’m picking this one instead of Bohemian Rhapsody from the first Wayne’s World movie. But, like The Sweetest Thing, this ended up making my list because it was unexpected. You have Wayne and his friends spying on Wayne’s girlfriend by dressing up as a utility worker, or police man, etc. While following her, they wind up on stage at a bar and are mistaken for the Village People; prompting the song. The performance wasn’t very memorable but the set up was hilarious.
Honorable Mention, Bohemian Rhapsody, Waynes World (1992) – After some thought, I am going to add this to the list after all, at least in honorable mention. I still stand by my choice of putting Y.M.C.A. before this, but I will say this scene (which is mostly them banging their heads to Queen’s classic hit) makes me laugh every time I see it.
