World Wrestling Entertainment used to air specials on NBC known as Saturday Night Main Event, but when the schedule was too full to air showing on Saturday, there would be a Friday special known as just The Main Event. There were five of these programs and all of them provided great moments in WWE history including superstars like Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, and Macho Man Randy Savage. Here’s a look at some of the best matches from The Main Event.
Mega Powers vs. Akeem and The Big Boss Man: A little over a month before Wrestlemania V, Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage were the best of friends and competing together as the unstoppable tag team known as the Mega Powers. Soon though, Macho Man’s wife, Miss Elizabeth, would drive a wedge between the two men and it was at Main Event where things went from bad to worse. Elizabeth got hurt and Hulk Hogan left in the middle of the match to carry her to the back. Hogan eventually returned and did what he did best by beating them with his leg drop, but that was not before Savage had already left. Later in the night Savage attacked Hulk Hogan, setting up their bout at Wrestlemania V and starting a great feud.
Hulk Hogan vs. Macho Man Randy Savage: Savage lost at Wrestlemania V to Hulk Hogan and it was not until almost a year later that fans would get to see a one on one rematch. With Sensational Sherri in his corner instead of Elizabeth, Savage put out another effort to stop Hogan but he could not get the job done. Guest referee, boxer Buster Douglas called the victory and after Macho Man confronted him, Savage received an upper cut to the jaw, a small precursor to the famous Mike Tyson punch at Wrestlemania XIV.
The Rockers vs. The Hart Foundation: This best two out three falls match never actually aired due to time constraints, but it is infamous for the faux title win. This may have been one of the best matches by the Rockers and they impressed up against Bret Hart the Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart, showcasing the skills that both Shawn Michaels and Marty Jennety had. Jennety got the first pin on Bret Hart, but Bret Hart capitalized on Shawn Michaels and pinned him for the second one of the match. It seemed as if the Rockers were going to lose until a quick reversal by Jennety led them to the victory and the tag team gold. The match did not air though and eventually the titles were pulled from the Rockers and stricken from the record as the Hart Foundation were rewarded them once again.
Andre the Giant vs. Hulk Hogan: Wrestlemania 3 was one of the biggest Wrestlemanias of all time, with a record setting crowd witnessing the massive Andre the Giant battle Hulk Hogan. A rematch was evitable and on February 5th, 1988 that rematch was scheduled to take place on network TV. This match actually has the highest ratings for any professional wrestling programs to air on TV, with over 30 million people watching. Hogan would not win the match though because of a corrupt referee and as soon as Andre the Giant won the World title, he handed it over to Ted Dibease and awarded him the WWE Champion. This was quickly overturned and the title was declared vacant until a tournament took place at Wrestlemania IV.
