Batman has been around since the 1930s, and whether it is being played Adam West, Michael Keaton, or Christian Bale, he will always remain to be one of the best super heroes of all time. Protecting the city of Gotham against evil, he has come across some of the most evil villains in superhero history. Here is a look at the best Batman villains of all time.
The Joker: When anybody thinks of Batman villains, the first one to come to mind is the evil clown, The Joker. There are so many different forms of the Joker, from Jack Nicholson’s classic performance, Mark Hamill’s great cartoon reincarnation, or the upcoming sadistic version, played by the late Heath Ledger. Plain and simple: Joker has no compassion; he will kill anybody to get what he wants or needs and has always been an obstacle for Batman. With his deformed white face, there is always a smirk on the Joker, and Batman is constantly doing battle with him to keep him from doing any more damage.
The Penguin: Characters in Batman, usually have over the top personalities based off of something, like the Joker’s clown. The Penguin is obviously from the arctic bird, but while real penguins may look cute and cuddley, Gotham City’s is not. In Batman Returns, the Penguin was played Danny Devito and it may be the most sadistic version. When he wasn’t eating raw fish, he was putting together an army of penguins or using one of his many umbrellas to try and wreck havoc. His umbrellas could hypnotize, shoot bullets, and even send out an electric shock.
The Riddler: While most villains from the Batman movies would result to violence to try and hurt Batman, The Riddler actually attempted to outsmart him. Using multiple riddlers that would include his catchphrase “Riddle me this”, the Riddler is one of Batman’s smartest foes. The old TV show had a great Riddler, and even better than that was Jim Carrey’s portrayal in Batman Forever. He brought his zaniness from The Mask and Ace Ventura, and mixed it in with a little creepiness to make the perfect character.
Bane: Bane made an appearance in the fourth Batman movie Batman and Robin, but that was a disappointing role that did not showcase the true power of Bane. Bane is a psychopath with a Leather mask that features tubes pumping adrenaline into him to make him even stronger. In a four part comic book series, Bane actually broke Batman’s back and proved to be a force to reckon with. He was also in the cartoon series, The Adventures of Batman and Robin and was made well there. Hopefully a newer Batman movie will do this character justice.
