There are in all seven temples here engraved from one large single rock. That is why the place is called Mahabalipuram, which means the place having seven temples. These temples were built in Seventh century. The two temples out of these seven temples have disappeared in the Sea over such a long time. However, you can still view the remaining five temples here. All these temples are in a chariot shape and are called chariots of each of the Pandava brothers, named Yudhisthir, Bhima, Arjun, Sahadev, and Nakul. In addition to these two chariot temples, the last two temples are named as Draupadi temple and the Lord Krishna temple. There is a statue of Lord Vishnu that is in a laughing posture, which is considered rare and is around 12 feet tall. There is one temple of Lord Varah also here, which is also worth seeing. The most vital fact regarding this place is that all these temples are situated just at the sea shore and you are not required to travel to reach to these temples. In all, two purposes are served by visiting this single place and they are beautiful outing at the Sea beach and the holy pilgrimage to one of the most religious places. The third part is it is very convenient to reach Mahabalipuram without any hassles from Chennai in less than an hour.
The Sea beach here is very enjoyable. The Tamilandu State government have arranged for all types of water sports here for the tourists. If you are interested in such water sports, this is the place for you. Many foreign tourists come here to relax and stay as long as one week here to enjoy the great sunshine here. There are Guest Houses operated by Tamilnadu State Government and the Central Government is here that can provide excellent rooms to stay. These complexes are really beautiful and contain all types of recreational facilities like indoor games, swimming pool, library, and the billiard table. The complete cottages are consisting of one seating room, spacious bed room, kitchen, and the modern toilets facilities. Such cottages are available for stay at the rates of around Rs.1600 ($40) per day with check out facility of 24 hours. However, it is definitely recommended to book this accommodation at least one month in advance so as to avoid last minute rush and disappointment. Many tourists who have got bored from the city hassles of Chennai come here at Mahabalipuram to relax and pass their time peacefully.
The food delicacies of South Indian style and the Continental items are easily available here in the restaurants of the Guest houses. The quality of food and the drinking water is very good here and you need not bring these with you. The weather is generally cool all through the year due to its location on the seashore. However, winter months are slightly better for the visit to avoid the scorching heat of Chennai.
