My friend and fellow Associated Content author Dawn Vogel is an artisan of no small talent.
In addition to her writing here about everything from costume design to music reviews, she blogs, edits books for a living and creates the most usual crocheted items and other crafts for her Etsy store. She is a gifted artisan.
Dawn says she has always been crafty, but her real obsession with crafting beautiful, fun, functional and sometimes downright strange items with her hands began about six years ago when she first learned to crochet. Before that she had been a fiber artist with various sewing projects (she makes or modifies many of her own clothes) and had been doing cross-stitch for years. But it was a late spring obsession with crochet that got Dawn active in the crafting world and eventually led to her creation of the Etsy store, famously labeled with her Scarywhitegirl moniker.
Scarywhitegirl Designs is a blend of obscure crafts and whatever whim Dawn might have at the moment. Those first days of crocheting, it was a huge purple afghan that she was committed to finishing even if it meant being covered in it during a 95-degree Southern Illinois summer. Luckily for her, my air-conditioner was always on.
After the afghan was complete, Dawn made me and herself bat wings shawls and then decided to take a break from the crochet for awhile, moving back to her cross-stitch. Everyone got cross-stitch for Christmas that year and I still have my beautiful Nightmare Before Christmas cross-stitched calendar.
As she evolved as an artisan, Dawn crocheted everything from roses for Valentine’s Day to miniature stuffed Cthulhu dolls for all her insane gamer friends. She also makes art cards, blank note cards, belts, hats, and just about anything else her mind can create.
Dawn has recently located to Seattle and become active in the arts and crafts community there, working with other Etsy artists to expand the sale of artwork there.
As a consumer of arts and crafts, I can also recommend Dawn’s work not just on quality, but also on price. Dawn is one of the rare artisans who creates her work purely for her own enjoyment. She sells it to pay for the materials and not much more. Therefore, her prices are great! Sure, you could get a cheaper hat at Wal-Mart, but then you’d be getting Wal-Mart quality.
The chenille hat and scarf she made me several years ago are still warms and beautiful and go through the wash without a problem. Try saying that about something purchased at a mass market retailer.
