Throughout this year UNLV is really putting its best foot forward, recalling its incredible history and planning for the future while it engages in a full year celebration of its 50th anniversary. Not many people outside of the state perhaps realize that UNLV began as a post WW II spin off of the University of Nevada in Reno. It began very modestly as a sort of extension school but gathered steam and in rather short order surpassed its Reno parent institution in campus size and student body. Today the school is the educational home of some 22,000 undergrads and thousands more graduate students. If you have ever wondered how the school mascot name at UNLV is the Runnin’ Rebels, school history reveals that it came from the fact that UNLV students want to rebel from Reno and when separation came, the name stuck. These are the kinds of things you can find out during 2008 when the past, present and future of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas is on display.

Sure the alleged gambling and entertainment center of the world is within striking distance and can be a temptation to students looking for pleasure and distraction. But the good news is the large community at UNLV and the accompanying activities that are provided there do compete for the interest and attention of underclassmen.
Sports for example draw not only varsity competitors playing at an NCAA Division I level in 16, they also encourage physical exercise and fun in 20 intramural sports played with other UNLV students. Anyone reviewing UNLV will discover that the need to attend shows elsewhere in the city is reduced by the presence of a music halls, performing arts centers and theaters right on campus. The University of Nevada-Las Vegas also offers some 120 student organizations to keep students engaged on campus and provide opportunities for socialization and networking among students.
Your Major Is on the List. It reasonable to suspect that a state university as large as UNLV is likely to have just about every conceivable academic major in its annual curriculum listing. While it is always wise to check the majors offered by schools you are seriously reviewing, it would be surprising not to find yours on the UNLV list. But what is also important for high school seniors is to give some consideration to the strong majors offered here. In other words, what is this school really most proud about in terms of academics. What you would find is that UNLV claims academic strength in its engineering, history and environmental studies. Not surprisingly it also has a national reputation for its courses in Hotel Administration and Management Information Systems. On the graduate level students come to UNLV for its Fine Arts and Creative Writing programs. While there is a tremendous diversity of courses from which to choose, UNLV becomes a better choice if you can match your interests and abilities to the strongest programs they provide.
Connections and Reflections. Because of the use demand for skilled and trained people in the entertainment and hotel industries in Las Vegas, students pursuing careers in those areas are at a great advantage as they move towards graduation. The always expanding number of UNLV graduates creates a wonderful network that can assist recent graduates in landing that first time position or making that important second connection.
Besides the help of UNLV alum, students who graduate will discover that the growing reputation of UNLV will also give them that foot in the door so essential when one starts out. Being able to say you graduated from UNLV is beginning to take on a bit more significance than in its early days. It is not a top tier school but for those who have come to UNLV for education in one of its strong disciplines the experience can be positive and the connection in years to come quite helpful.
As much fun as it many sound to come to college in a place like Las Vegas, there is one noticeable drawback about which students and parents may show concern. Out of 22,000 students, only about 1,500 live on campus. Before you go to far in your review make sure you thoroughly investigate the housing options that the school recommends. This really can be a deal breaker.
