AN OBSESSION WITH BIODIESEL & SUSTAINABLE ENERGY
For those of you who have been with me since the beginning, my very first article with Associated Content was of a technical nature, about how to use industrial centrifuges to make biodiesel. Afterwards, I showed you my home-based biodiesel processor, and later exposed the unspoken scam about biodiesel car conversion kits.
Needless to say, I’m smitten with the Greasy Maiden, who openly embraces the whole biofuel issue and sustainable energy movementas our future unfolds.
Now, yet another news item appears in the never-ending expansion of the bio-based energy transit spectrum.
NOT FRENCH-FRY POWERED – FISH & CHIPS THIS TIME
This month (exact dated still not released) Great Britain’s Virgin Atlantic is set to conduct the world’s first commercial air flight powered in part by an undisclosed form of biofuel – most likely of a chemistry similar to that of biodiesel. One of Virgin’s jets will cross the English Channel in a flight from London to Amsterdam purported to be a mix of 20% biofuel and 80% conventional jet fuel.
Says Virgin, the fuel is to be of a “truly sustainable type that does not compete with food and fresh water resources”. This statement can be important, especially given the kind of impact producing large amounts of biofuel can have on humans.
British billionaire Richard Branson states his Virgin Group of companies (Virgin Atlantic among them) intends to be a leader in the biofuel industry in coming years. Virgin is rumored to be developing or acquiring a sustainable form of biofuel which may power their jetliners in the future.
While this is not to be the very first jet flight using biodiesel, this is to be the first jet flight by a commercialjet aircraft – a big step past the many corporate lawyers and other decision makers who might otherwise hamper such progress.
