There is a website called Njection.com that not only provides automotive information but also provides up to date information on speed traps. The speed trap uses Microsoft Live Maps to help pinpoint local speed traps. You can sign up to be a member for free. You can just type in the location you want to search for speed traps and see what comes up. This website first launched around Thanksgiving and has already had over 50 thousand speed traps added to its website.
There are many who feel that these speed traps are a necessity to keep those who like to speed off the road. It is true people will drive a lot slower when they see a police car in their area. In New Jersey, which is where I am from, there are speed traps located everywhere. Whether you are on the parkway or just driving on a side street you are sure to come across one. In many cases you will not see the police vehicle until they have already ran the radar on you. In my area you will see plenty of cops not only in cars with radars but also standing behind bushes with a radar waiting for someone to speed by. It does tend to get very annoying, but in the long run it does help to make people to slow down just by the police sitting there. There are others who don’t seem to agree with speed traps being a good idea.
For example many don’t like the idea that police will hide behind a bush or tree and then just pop out in front of your vehicle and give you a ticket. In some cases people have received tickets just for being one to two miles over the speed limit. In New Jersey many also tend to disagree with how fast the police say they were going. Speed traps can also cause traffic congestions as police are trying to get multiple people to stop. So in that aspect it may be less of a head ache to just avoid the speed traps all together. In most cases you will find speed traps generally set up in the same areas. Eventually you get used to seeing them and you will either avoid that particular road altogether or have no problem with taking that particular road in the first place.
One of the reasons why New Jersey probably has so many speed traps is because they have so many speeders. Nowadays it seems that as soon as teenagers get their license they cant wait to start drag racing or just speeding wherever they have to go. So if you really think about it roads that have known speed traps can tend to be a little safer than those without. The bottom line is that speed traps have an upside and a downside it really just depends on how you personally feel about them.
