Tween pop star Miley Cyrus has had quite a year. The daughter of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus (“Achy Breaky heart”), 15 year old Miley has catapulted to fame since she began starring in the Disney channel series Hannah Montana in 2006. The series starts Miley as a “normal” teen girl who has a secret: she’s really the famous pop star Hannah Montana. A quick wardrobe change, including a signature long blond wig, and her school friends are none the wiser. The show is corny but cute, a perfect vehicle for the tween girl audience that it’s trying to capture.
The Hannah Montana craze caught on quickly. Since 2006, Miley Cyrus has landed merchandising deals, hit CDs called “Hannah Montana” and “Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus” and a controversial sold out concert tour. So it only makes sense that Disney wanted to capitalize on her appeal even further while she’s still red hot. Thus, a new movie, “Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus Best of Both Worlds Concert” has just been released nationwide. For one week only (February 1 -7 ).
Because so many kids had to miss the sold out concert tour last year (scalpers were wolfing up the tickets and selling them for thousands of dollars each), this is a good way for true Hannah fans to see the best moments of the concert tour as well as some backstage footage. And with the big screen, you’ll get a better seat than at any of the real concerts.
The movie is pure Rated-G fun. Cyrus has a strong singing voice and definite stage appeal. Sitting through this movie is not torture for parents. The poppy songs begin to grow on you and there’s nothing offensive. It’s music you can feel good about your kids listening to. Even Cyrus’ frequent costume changes are tame. There’s plenty of glitter and glam but nothing even remotely inappropriate.
The movie is in 3-D, which will give kids an extra thrill. It features tons of concert footage from Cyrus’ sold out 69-city concert tour, as well as backstage footage including some with Cyrus’ daddy Billy Ray (who also seems to be a tween favorite, since he plays Miley’s dad on the TV show).Cyrus switches from Hannah to Miley, just like on the show, and sings all of her most popular songs including “Nobody’s Perfect” and “Girls’ Night Out”.
To appeal to the boy-crazy fans in the audience, there’s also some scenes with The Jonas Brothers, the young heartthrobs who opened for Cyrus on her concert tour. The Jonas Brothers are appealing as well, singing 2 familiar songs that the young fans in the movie footage just scream over.
And even if you’re a non-fan who’s just taking your kids to see the movie, the movie is only 74minutes long, so no one will get antsy waiting for it to end.
Just like the real concert tour, though, tickets to the Hannah Montana movie may be hard to come by. Smart fans scooped up tickets weeks ago, from online venues or from Disney’s Hannah Montana website. Now, many cities are reporting sold out movie showings. In some cities, the movie begins airing as early as 8:15 AM, with showings throughout the day.
