Mother’s Day is coming up in less than a month, and it’s time to think about what to do in celebration of your favorite mom. In my family, there are two days of the year where I balk at cooking (something I really enjoy) and insist on being treated like the queen I am. Those days are Easter and Mother’s Day. Traditionally, our family is treated to a Mother’s Day brunch at a local restaurant, where all can gorge on fine food. There are many places in the Detroit area where your family can go to celebrate Mother’s Day in style.
A great choice for a Mother’s Day brunch gathering is the Melting Pot. The Melting Pot is a fondue restaurant, and this year for Mother’s Day, moms can be treated to a four-course fondue dinner at one-half off. Fondue can be “fun”-do, even for small children. (Mine haven’t had an accident yet, and they’ve participated in fondue since they were very young.) This special includes the melted cheese appetizer, available in American, Swiss, Cheddar or fiesta, a salad of your choice, entrée cooked in either oil or court bouillon, and of course, finishing with the chocolate fondue of your choice. A four-course meal normally costs $35. The Melting Pot is located at 888 West Big Beaver in Troy, and the phone number for reservations is 248-362-2221. (There are also Melting Pots located in Novi, Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids.)
If you like a wonderful atmosphere that harkens back into the prime of Detroit, I would strongly recommend the Mother’s Day brunch at the Whitney. Once the mansion home of lumber baron David Whitney, Jr., the Whitney now houses three floors of restaurant and cigar bar in a 21,000 square foot exquisite Romanesque structure. In many ways, having dinner in the home is worth the price, as it is architecturally stunning. My favorite area to dine is the music room. The Whitney is offering their usual Sunday brunch menu for $35. The Whitney is located at 4431 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. The phone number for reservations is 313-832-5700.
For a special brunch with a spectacular view, consider trying the Coach Insignia for this year’s special Mother’s Day brunch. The Coach Insignia is located atop the tallest building in Detroit in the Renaissance Center, and even though the restaurant no longer rotates, diners are treated to a breathtaking view of Windsor, Ontario and the Detroit River. Normally not open on Sundays, the Coach Insignia is making an exception for mothers in the Detroit area by offering not only a brunch menu, but will also be open for dinner. Brunch is priced at $34.95 per adult. The wine list at this restaurant is second to none. Call 313-567-2622 to make your reservation.
If you like the feel of brunching by the river but find yourself getting queasy with the thought of going all the way up to the top of the Renaissance Center in a glass elevator (73 floors), consider Mother’s Day brunch at the Rattlesnake Club. The Rattlesnake Club is located right on the river, at 300 River Place in Detroit, just around the corner from East Jefferson Avenue. This year’s Mother’s Day brunch is served buffet style, and is $45 per adult. The Rattlesnake Club is home to some of the most inventive culinary offerings in the Detroit area with a wonderful wine list, and Mother’s Day promises to be another winner. After your brunch, you can work off some of the calories by taking a walk by the Detroit River. Call 313-567-400 for reservations.
Another favorite spot for a Mother’s Day brunch is the dining room at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Dearborn. While brunch there is quite pricey (usually around $60 each), the food is literally to die for. The Ritz will provide jazz entertainment and champagne along with their exquisite culinary creations. This year, the Ritz is celebrating 100 years of Mother’s Day by entering all mothers into a drawing for prizes, including 100 minutes of massage, a 100-rose bouquet or $100 gift certificate to the Grill Restaurant. The Ritz-Carlton is located at 300 Town Center Drive in Dearborn, and reservations can be made by calling 313-441-2000.
It’s not to early to think about Mother’s Day brunch opportunities in the Detroit area. I’ll be seeing you there!
