Missionaries need financial support to be able to uproot themselves from their homeland and go to where they are most needed abroad. They have to have the monetary means for their own living expenses as well as for supplies to aid in their work, which could be as basic as medicines, clean water, food and educational resources such as teaching books.
Churches usually collect funds for missionaries through its member’s generosity. Church leaders can help speed up the process by setting a goal and a deadline for which they hope the necessary funding is met. Money dropped in the offering plate isn’t necessarily the funding which will go towards the expenditure of missionary needs. In order to distinguish this difference most churches will have separate offering plates or special boxes in which the money for missionaries can be dropped. One example of differentiation comes at the hands of the Baptists. The Baptists will give their members a special envelope for which to deposit their missionary offerings.
Churches can better help missionaries in need of financial support to reach their monetary obstacles by encouraging self-promotion. Churches wishing to support a missionary can do the following to boost funds.
Allow members to meet the missionary
The missionary and their family if married should visit the church. By visiting the church and making an appearance, members can put a face to the name of the missionary thus making their contributions or investment if you will more personal.
The missionary should take the pulpit for a service
He or she should speak on their intentions, where they are going, what country and what they hope to accomplish. Its basically telling the members of the congregation who they’ll be backing and what their donation will be going toward. The directive the missionary should focus on is by considering that most people wouldn’t want to go forth and invest in a stock blindly. But members will increase their “Love offerings” if they are given a more specific purpose as to the use of that money. The missionary in essence becomes the stock.
Sample medicines, books etc. should be shown
This will give the congregation an idea of things that will be used in the mission work.
Allow the missionary a question & answer time
The members should be given the opportunity to ask questions. If there’s any doubt about why they should freely give their money in support of the missionary presenting their self it can be removed during the answer time. If need be the missionary can pique interest with an itemized spending chart.
