The Bible is every Christian’s guidebook for life. Each story has lessons that we can apply today. What can we learn from the story of Adam?
When we are born into the world we are just babies. Our minds haven’t developed, we don’t know what’s going on and none of us can really remember the day we were born. We also come into this world belonging to somebody else. We have parents that are in charge of us and a government with rules we must obey.
Imagine what it would be like to be like Adam though. When Adam was created in the Bible he was immediately a grown man with a fully developed mind. When he took his first breath there were so many new things that his head was probably spinning.
When Adam was created he looked around and realized that he was the only human. Adam then assumed everything belonged to him and he was right. The water, the trees, the animals, everything was Adam’s. There was just one rule. Don’t eat fruit from that one tree.
No problem right? There’s other fruit on other trees. Adam had everything else so who needed that one thing he couldn’t have? But Adam couldn’t resist. He eventually ate the fruit from the forbidden tree with Eve. Adam and Eve were then kicked from the Garden of Eden. They lived in paradise and were exiled. What an idiot! He had everything! There was only one rule he had to follow and he blew it. Now before we’re too harsh on Adam we have to realize that we do the same thing everyday.
As I said before, things are a lot different now. None of us can say that everything belongs to us. We don’t have the freedom or all the things that Adam could’ve had, but we do have plenty. Most of us have friends. Most of us have family. Most of have homes, clothes, food, televisions. If you can read this article right now you either own a computer or have access to one. Somebody created sports for us to enjoy. Somebody created books. Somebody created video games. These are all things we can enjoy and yet we what more.
We all have plenty of things to keep us satisfied and yet we still want more money, more fame or better looks. A lot of people want to have a good time and do things they shouldn’t, when there are things that are just as fun that aren’t wrong. Some of us covet other people’s belongings, like their car, their house or even their wife.
The lesson from Adam’s story is simple. We all have plenty. When we start to desire things even more things, things that we don’t even need, is when we will see our world come crashing down.
