Much has been made about “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne who wrote the book after studying a lot of old books written on the so-called “Law of Attraction”. Even a movie has been made based on her book. It is touted as a “new age self-help” book, even on Amazon. It received world-wide notoriety, thanks to Oprah Winfrey as she invited author after author to explore this so-called “new” thing. As a Christian, I know there is nothing new about “The Secret.” This is simply smart marketing. Anyone who has studied the Bible and knows Jesus Christ as Personal Savior can take you back to the book of Genesis to prove it is not new!
Let’s explore some of the teachings of these new age teachers in this and other new age books.
We are supposed to go through our day affirming that “God is in everything I see.”
Really? So the evil in this world that we see displayed so prominently in our media — God is in that? The human trafficking in Thailand of girls as young as five years old — God is in that? Not the God I know!
We are told to repeat the affirmation “I am the light of the world.”
So Jesus was a liar when He said He was the light of the world in John 8:12? Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
We are to say and believe “My salvation comes from me.”
So the death on the cross of Jesus Christ was just some big hoax by God?
There is no such thing as sin. There is no guilt in you. Your calling is to devote yourself to the denial of guilt.
That is not what I John 1:8-10 says: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”
(OR) Romans 3:22-25 “This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in His blood.”
A slain Christ has no meaning. A journey to the cross is a useless journey.
OK, it’s not like the Christians were not warned that this blasphemous teaching was present in the New Testament times, and would be making a comeback today.
The Apostle Paul warned the Corinthian believers that the cross would indeed seem like foolishness to the world but it was the power of God to save.
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent… Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” (1 Cor. 1: 18-22)
This one is, in my opinion, the worst lie of all: The name Jesus is simply a symbol of any of the many gods to whom you pray.
The Apostle Peter healed a cripple and then was asked by what power he healed? He looked them straight in the eye, and under the inspiration of The Holy Spirit, he said, “then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed.”
This next new age teaching is definitely not new! The recognition of God is the recognition of you.
Let’s go all the way back to Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” [planting doubt in Eve’s mind]
Eve tells the serpent that God told them they would die if they touched what He had forbidden them to touch.
Then the serpent (verse 4-5) calls God a liar: “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
OK! Therein is the so-called “new age” secret! You are your own god! Oh, I’m sorry. If I can be my own god, I’m in big, big trouble! I know me. I’m not equipped to be God Almighty!
What grieves me most about this blasphemous doctrine is that it is being promoted by Oprah Winfrey who has a large platform. This is the same Oprah that, as a young girl, loved Jesus and wanted desperately to be either a preacher or a missionary for Him. How did she get side-tracked?
Paul, speaking to his spiritual son, Timothy the young minister (in II Timothy 4), admonished him to beware of false doctrine.
“In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge:
Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-with great patience and careful instruction.
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.
They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” I do believe we are living in that time of “itching ears.” God help us.
