The Iraq War has lasted 5 years. When will it end? It has been years since President Bush declared “Mission Accomplished” and yet the Iraq war is still a quagmire, with soldiers dying everyday. Most Americans do not approve of the war and would like it to end. Our worldwide reputation is tarnished by the Iraq war started based on inaccurate statements about weapons of mass destruction. Too many American soldiers have died. Our military is worn out from redeployments and harsh battle conditions.
Currently, 3,988 Americans soldiers have lost their lives in the Iraq War. Every life is precious; it is truly disturbing that our President does not seem to understand this concept. While President Bush laughs and dances on the news, soldiers are dying in Iraq. All over America families are in anguish due to the loss of a loved one in the war. Also, over 29, 398 American soldiers have been injured in the Iraq War.
The veterans returning from the Iraq War typically are receiving inadequate medical care. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is common among the soldiers and immediate medical care is required; however, paperwork to obtain military medical care is complex, vexing, and requires lengthy waits for processing.
The Iraq War has thus far cost America $503,078, 783. Every day America spends over $275 million per day on the war. For more information see: www.Costofwar.com. America is in a possible recession and yet the government spending on the war remains out of control. The stock market is on a roller coaster ride that is alarming and speaks to the turmoil of our nation as long as we are at war.
President Bush’s approval rating as of February, 2008 has sunk to 19%. The last President to have a rating anywhere near that low was President Harry Truman; he had an approval rating of 22% during the Korean War in 1952. Thus President Bush has the lowest approval rating in the past 5 decades.
Our Mission is not Accomplished in Iraq. Bush has not quelled the civil strife in Iraq; however, he has accomplished alienating the American public, enraging the Middle East against America, thus endangering our safety, and starting a war that has divided our country and cost the lives of 1,189,800 Iraqi citizens. How can we be helping a country when we have killed so many of their people?
Our current Republican candidate, John McCain, has already spoken about starting a new war. Our country seems to be veering in a militaristic direction that many Americans are extremely uncomfortable with. When will the war end? How many American soldiers will have died by that date? How many more lives will be sacrificed before our government does the right thing and ends the war. How many more days will America be at much higher risk than normal because our country has started a war that has inflamed the terrorists of the Middle East?
