Is there any possibility whatsoever that the media and Obama supporters talk out of both sides of their mouth? It would seem hypocrisy strikes again!
In the early 1980’s there was this dude who commentated on NFL football. His name was Howard Cosell and he worked for ABC on their Monday Night Football broadcasts. In 1983 he referred to Alvin Garrett, a Black wide receiver for my home team, the Washington Redskins, as a “little monkey.” The exact quote was made as Garrett caught a ball and dodged defenders on his way to a long run. Cosell remarked “look at that little monkey run.”
And then came the storm, replete with thunder, lightning and flooding, as in a flooding of criticism for Cosell’s statement. No matter that there was taped evidence of Cosell referring to white NFL player Mike Adamle as a “little monkey,” and no one on the planet thought that was a racial slur. But the Alvin Garrett comment cost Cosell his job. Ah, PC strikes again, or more accurately, for one of the first of the millions of times it would be employed since that night in 1983.
No matter that Cosell called his grandchildren “little monkeys.” No matter that no one, Black or White who knew Cosell ever thought him a racist. No, PC was allowed to express itself in its employment of “Selective Outrage.”
Flash forward to December 5, 2002. Trent Lott, R-MS, the Senate Majority Leader, was attending the 100th birthday party for Senator Strom Thurmond. At said party, a sort of “roast” as it were, Lott remarked in honoring Thurmond the following: “When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either.”
And for that Lott was called racist. Ya see Thurmond ran on a segregationist ticket in 1948. This was the time of Jim Crow. I offer no excuse for such; merely citing the historical facts and social mores of the time, and in 1948 segregationist was a politically viable platform. To take today’s standards and apply them to an event from 60 years ago is historical revisionism in the extreme.
No matter the Lott was honoring a 100 year old man with the usual hyperbole that such occasions call for as SOP. Because Thurmond ran as a segregationist, any positive comment about the man with regard to his political career could be PC speaked into an indictment against the person uttering the statement. And Senator Lott was forced to resign as Senate Majority Leader. Can you say “Selective Outrage?”
And now we sit here in 2008 and it seems PC speak and its selective application strike again. Somehow if Obama makes a statement that is clearly more of a racial stereotype than anything Cosell or Lott said, why according to his supporters, the naysayers, and the mainstream media, popularly known as “The Apologists for Liberals and Arbiters of Selective Outrage,” there was nothing at all wrong with Senator Obama’s statement.
And for me, a White man, to even mention this topic is a clear sign I am a racist. After all, I am a Southerner, therefore I do have sex with my sister and I obviously hate all Black people. I do drive a pick-up, and I have been known to tip a Budweiser or two on occasion, so yep, I hate everybody not the same as me, especially Black folks! And if you believe that, need I inform you of exactly what you need to be kissing?
So Obama can call White folks “typical White people,” and explain to all of us how we have these White peeps stereotypes “bred into us.” Nice, huh? I wonder if I could have gotten away with such a comment about Black folks? Whatcha think? Yes? No? Maybe?
If you have an honest bone in your body I think you know the answer to my rhetorical question. But then again, I was asking that question of the naysayers and the “The Apologists for Liberals and Arbiters of Selective Outrage,” so we all know the answer.
We now inhabit a world where the naysayers have assumed the lofty position of arbiter of our innermost thoughts. They can attach or detach as they see fit whatever meaning they wish, so long as it furthers their goals. Honesty means nothing. Consistency means nothing. Forthright application of standards means nothing, because as they know what we haters mean when we speak, they have assumed it their responsibility to clarify to the world according to their own visions.
So Whitey, don’t you dare let your pale ass make a statement like the ones I am making here. No matter what you say or do, these lofty moral arbiters know the truth. No longer can we Crackers make such racial statements as “look at that little monkey run.” And we’d surely better not honor anyone in any way who ever made an objectionable statement because they, the lofty, can turn one’s thoughts or words into whatever they wish.
Remember, in the world we now inhabit it is us, Whitey, the pig of pigs, the low, the foul, the vermin that we are, who’d better watch ourselves. Clearly it is our words that can be twisted to mean what the lofty want according to their enlightened vision of Mankind. And there is no way Senator Obama’s comments can be so construed. Why, that would be unfair, huh?
I mean, who do we think we are? How dare we be offended at Obama uttering two racial slurs in the same statement? After all, Whitey deserves all we get, right? But what about the phrase “turnabout is fair play?” Oh, that’s right! My stupid Cracker ass forgot the naysayers and The Apologists for Liberals and Arbiters of Selective Outrage are always on call to attach, or in this case detach, whatever meaning they wish, so long as it furthers their partisan desires. Remember what I told you to kiss, right? You smart cats pucker up your lips; I’ll pucker something else in anticipation.
