Are you an aspiring interior designer with big dreams of owning your own firm? Thousands of talented interior design gurus and decorating professionals are sending in applications video submissions for the Top Design reality TV show, another popular series on Bravo TV . Top Design is from the makers of Project Runway and Top Chef, and offers talented designers a chance to land a placement in ELLE Décor magazine, along with $100,000 to start their own business.
Do you have what it takes to compete with America’s most talented interior design professionals? Open calls are taking place in only a few metro cities around the country, and you’ll need to submit a video and formal application for review; here’s what else you need to do to become a Top Design contestant:
The Top Design Video Submission
The video submission is one of the most important elements of the Top Design contestant search, so be sure to take the time to edit and shoot for the perfect pitch. The video offers the producers to find key personality traits they need for the show, and gives you a chance to prove you’re the best choice amongst all of the applicants.
You’ll need to submit a video that is no longer than five minutes in length, and formatted as a VHS, DVD, or miniDV. The tape should include your full name, glimpses of your hometown, information about your neighborhood, and any other parts of your life you want to share with the judges. You cannot shoot your Top Design video in a house other than one you or your family own. You will also need to be cautious of copyright infringement and trademarks – avoid logos and taking pictures of anyone other than yourself.
Key Items to Include with Your Top Design Application
In addition to the Top Design video, you will need to include:
-A completed application form
-A single photo of yourself
-A current resume
-A copy of your working design portfolio (or link)
-A signed Certification of Veracity
It’s important that you don’t include anything more than these six items; this means no samples, notes, cards, or other attachments as your Top Design application will be rejected. However, you can add information fro the application if you run out of room, and these can be stapled to the main application for reference.
Questions Asked on the Top Design Application
Both professional and personal questions are included as part of your Top Design application, and you’ll need to answer these as thoroughly as possible. Be prepared to answer questions such as:
-Have you completed an interior design program?
-What are among your favorite styles/eras for interiors?
-Who is your least favorite interior designer, and why?
-Describe your most embarrassing moment or experience.
-What is an odd fact about you or talent you possess?
-Have you applied to be on any TV shows in the past year?
You’ll need to answer every question for your application to be complete, so be sure to check it thoroughly before submitting it. You will also be including professional and personal references, and confirming that you don’t have any affiliations with NBC or Magic Elves productions.
Contestants must be at least 21 years of age, and cannot be a candidate for public office until one year after the show airs. The application and disclosures are lengthy, – 18 pages total – so be prepared to review it in detail before signing on the dotted line.
The Top Design Open Call
You can submit your video and application any time before the deadline, but the Open Calls are your opportunity to ‘interview’ with the judging panel and interviewers. Be prepared to answer similar questions found on your application, but send in your application materials before the casting call . The open calls are just an opportunity to meet a few of the judging team members face-to-face.
Bravo TV announces its Top Design casting schedule at the beginning of each year, and more information can be found online on the BravoTV website.
