Flirty and feminine. Those are the precise words to describe the finished product of this zebra print home desk project. Whether you have an existing wood desk you want to refurbish, or have purchased an unpainted or unfinished one, this project is simple and should take just about a weekend to complete.
For this project, you will need:
– One wooden desk
– Medium grit sandpaper
– Soft cloth or tack cloth
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black
– Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss White
– Zebra Print Stencil Kit from Designer Stencils
– Brown craft paper
– Masking Tape
– Newspaper or a large drop cloth
This project involves an ample amount of spray paints, thus making it quite messy, It is highly recommended that the first step of this project include covering your work area with a ton of newspaper or a large drop cloth. If you wooden desk contains any previous paint or stain, use a bit of paint stripper (available at local home improvement and hardware stores) according to manufacturer directions.
Remove any drawers and hardware from the desk base. Make sure all drawers are free of hardware. Gently sand the entire desk base and drawer fronts using medium grit sandpaper. Wipe away any excess dust from the wood with a soft cloth or tack cloth.
Spray every surface of the desk base with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Primer in All-Purpose White. Let the primed wood set for twenty minutes before adding a second coat. Dry for two or more hours, or until the primer is no longer tacky to touch.
Cut and measure an amount of brown craft paper equivalent to that of the desk top. Cover the desk top with the paper, securing with a bit of masking tape. Spray the lower portion of the desk with several coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black. Keep adding coats until you have reached your desired shade of black. Dry overnight.
Remove the brown paper from the top of the desk. Cover the surrounding black painted areas of the wooden desk with additional paper and tape. Spray the entire top of the desk with several coats of Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss White. Dry completely.
Prime and paint the drawer fronts in white. Dry overnight before reattaching the hardware.
Lay the Zebra Print Stencil from Designer Stencils flat on the desktop. Secure firmly using masking tape. Spray the exposed area with Krylon Indoor Outdoor Paint in Gloss Black. Dry completely before removing the stencil, repositioning, and spraying again. Continue this process until the entire desk top is covered with zebra print.
Allow your new desk to dry overnight before moving back inside and enjoying.
