People get bored; that’s a fact. When it comes to home decor boredom can become quite expensive. There are, however, lots of ways you can change the look of certain decor pieces by simply working with a few craft or sewing supplies. Take throw pillows, for example. They can be expensive to replace, but you can easily change the look, making them appear to be different pillows entirely.
There are many different designs you can make from the pillows you already have. Stitch lace around the edges of a round pillow, or even a square or rectangular pillow. This change is subtle yet elegant. Or, purchase tassels (or make your own), and stitch them onto the corners of square or rectangular pillows. These are all easy changes that can be done even with no machine. If you don’t have a sewing machine, and you don’t hand stitch, consider fabric glue which can be found at any craft store.
Simple pieces of ribbon can give pillows a sophisticated look in no time. Cut them to the proper length and glue them to the pillow, forming a tic-tac-toe effect, or a different design. You can even form lettering from the ribbon strips.
It doesn’t get any easier than fabric paints when it comes to decorating your old pillows. The paints are dispensed from a squeeze bottle, allowing you to simply write or draw on the pillow. You’ll find the paints in a variety of types, like metallic, pearl, puffy and more. The paints are washable and inexpensive.
A simple piece of fabric can make your old pillows look brand new. Look around the fabric store and find cartoon fabric, pet prints, jungle prints and more. Cut the fabric piece slightly smaller than the pillow and glue into place. Use roping, ribbon or other materials to hide the edges of the new piece of fabric. After attaching the new piece use buttons, sequin, fake jewels, and other notions, to decorate with flair. Instead of fabric glue you can also use fusible web. It’s found at any sewing supply store and makes it easy to bond one fabric to another, using an ordinary iron.
Iron-on decals, which are specifically made for attaching to fabrics, are easy to fuse onto your throw pillows. They come in shapes of letters, numbers, pets, and many other designs. You’ll pay extra for large appliques but you can search online and find great bargains. Just use the fusible web – or fabric glue – to attach the applique to the pillow.
Doilies are perfect for adding country charm to existing pillows. Use fusible web or fabric glue to attach the doily to the pillow, then add a satin bow, or even a smaller doily, in the center of the first one. Other things you can use include lace, printed fabric or even netting.
There are so many different things you can use to change your pillows. Yarn, pockets, gingham, leather strips, braided fabrics, felt cutouts, chenille pipe cleaners, and even pom poms are easy to attach and will give you new pillows with little effort.
Just because you can’t afford new throw pillows doesn’t mean you can’t have new throw pillows! Look around the house for things you can use or visit a local department or craft store for some inexpensive supplies. You’ll have loads of fun creating the pillows and your guests will be very impressed!
