Foo Ho Kitchen is conveniently located in the A & P Shopping Center in Barnegat Plaza, Barnegat, New Jersey. Although I shop at this particular A & P at least twice a month, I never paid much notice to Foo Ho Kitchen until recently. My family and I visited the A & P to pick up a few necessities and the sale items that were featured that week, my husband asked if I would like to try this Chinese restaurant and pick up some food to take home for dinner. Since I am always up for a break from cooking, I enthusiastically agreed.
After depositing our non perishables in the car, we trooped over to Foo Ho Kitchen. Foo Ho Kitchen is strictly a take out restaurant so we sat down on the few chairs offered for seating and perused the menu. Many people rely on their old standbys when ordering Chinese food whether trying a new restaurant or visiting an old favorite. My family is no exception.
After checking out the menu of what Foo Ho Kitchen had to offer, we ordered a quart of roast pork fried rice for my daughters to share, two shrimp egg rolls, a quart of chicken with broccoli for my husband and order of General Tso’s Chicken for myself. After seeing on the menu that there was a fifty cent charge for fortune cookies, I ordered them as well since I knew my daughters would be disappointed if they got home and there were no fortune cookies to enjoy. This was the first thing that annoyed me about Foo Ho Kitchen. I have been eating at Chinese restaurants all of my life and have never eaten at one where you needed to pay for the fortune cookies. Even though it was a nominal charge of fifty cents, and I am not cheap by any means, it was the idea of it that bothered me.
Even thought the restaurant was empty and it didn’t seem as though any one was busy with phoned in orders, we still waited for quite a while for our food to be ready. After what seemed to be an eternity with two hungry kids in two, our take out order was finally ready. Our total bill came to $23.40. The price was certainly reasonable for dinner for a family of four. I only hoped the food would be enjoyable once we arrived home.
After arriving at home and unpacking our dinner, I was immediately disappointed when I saw my husband’s chicken with broccoli dish. The rice was certainly plentiful and looked good, but the chicken pieces were quite small and lacking in quantity. There was quite a bit more broccoli than chicken as compared to other Chinese restaurants we have previously ordered this meal from. My General Tso’s chicken was rather bland and did not contain the usual tasty flavor that my favorite dish usually has. The sauce seemed thinner and watered down which would explain the lack of flavor. I only took a few bites and finished the rice. My daughters had no complaints about their shrimp egg rolls, but didn’t finish them even though they usually enjoy this Chinese restaurant appetizer and leave little scraps on their plate.
Overall, I found Foo Ho Kitchen to be quite a disappointment and would not eat there again. Foo Ho Kitchen is located on Route 9 in the Barnegat Plaza.
