Are you a smoker and thinking of quitting this habit? Perhaps this thought has been going through your mind often every time you read or hear about a near one’s illness – cancer or heart attack. And it makes you wonder whether the cigarette you have in hand are worth the risk? Here, the point in question is not to debate on the harmful effects or otherwise of smoking. This piece of article is to give a few thoughts on “how to quit smoking” and I hope you will find these tips are useful.
Let us not doubt it. Nicotine is highly addictive and it requires huge amount of will power to get out of this habit. And that decides the ultimate winner – whether it is you or the cigarette.
1. If the first puff you take is say at “time x”, try to postpone it by 5 minutes to begin with.
2. If you succeed in the first 5 minutes, then try to extend it by another 5 minutes and so on.
3. Please note that every minute you prolong goes a long way in achieving your ultimate goal.
4. If you have reached a point where you have postponed smoking for half an hour, then say aloud “if I can do it for HALF AN HOUR, why not stop it for another half an hour”. Man, now you are truly on the way to stop smoking.
Next important thing to keep in mind, perhaps worth repeating it aloud as well …
“Which is better? I did not smoke even one cigarette today or I smoked only a few as compared to yesterday” Ask this question whenever the urge to smoke arises. Definitely the answer will be the former. I have read many articles asking to drink a glass of water or chew gum, etc., but I found the above questions very powerful to defy as it psyches your ego. Of course, one also needs to divert his/her attention to some other work to keep the mind busy. If you are bored or tired with your work, then play a game of cards or try some mind games like “su do ku” or “scrabble”.
Yet another and an important factor as well .. when a person (who was a habitual smoker) suddenly finds himself/herself without any cigarette, the yearning for the same increases with every minute (at least, this is my experience). So, what to do now? Get one stick from somebody, or ask somebody to buy and bring it to you (please do not go out and buy it yourself). Once you have that piece in your hand, see how your mind is now relaxed with the favourite thing back in your hands. Don’t light it up immediately. Give it 5 minutes (now that you have the desired cigar in your hand, you will find it easy to let time pass by). And then, follow the steps mentioned above. You will find at the end of the day, you will be still rolling the cigar in your hand and would not have smoked!
Try the above as I did and I am happy to scream and shout with joy “I have quit smoking”.
Best Wishes in your efforts also.
