I am a huge fan of candles of all sorts. I have tea candles, candles made of honeycomb, candles that smell like baked goods, and so on. I just can’t seem to get enough of them! Recently though I noticed an advertisement in my Glamour magazine for a soy based candle made by Essence of Beauty. I am not usually one of those people that sees an add and has to go out and get the product but something about this one intrigued me.
Glamour advertises this candle as a three in one product. It is a candle for one but when it is melted it can be used as massage oil and lotion. A long, long time ago somewhere far, far away, I had a run in with candle wax and it wasn’t pretty. It took an excruciating hour to delicately remove the candle wax (and some of my skin along the way) from my back so of course this is what immediately pops into my head. Anyhow, I find myself adventurous and head out to get this Essence of Beauty candle. Glamour advertises it as a product of CVS pharmacy so I head out to find my nearest one. I am pretty sure that there is one about 20 miles from here (and no that is not a long way to go since I am 20 miles from anywhere) so I jump in my car and head out. I end up pulling up to a Rite Aid. The last I remember, these are CVS stores.
So I begin my search in the Rite Aid stores, up one isle and down the next and come up with NOTHING. I end up asking someone that works there where I can find the candle. She informs me that she has never heard of the product line. I’m disappointed but I decide to try another, what I thought to be, CVS. I pull up in the parking lot and find that once again I am at a Rite Aid. I figure I’d try again anyway. I didn’t think this product line could be exclusive to one store. Once again I am out of luck. I go back to my car feeling a bit defeated so I decided to get a little information. I type in CVS in the locate area and Caldwell, Idaho in the location section of my search. My result shows that there are no CVS stores within 100 miles. Ouch!
I head home and fire up my trust computer. Thank God for the Internet. I go to CVS.com and put Essence of Beauty in the search section of their web page. Hallelujah! There it is!!! Essence of Beauty Soy Candle in Passion Flower, love it! Since I know there aren’t any CVS stores around, I order two. Besides, the shipping is the same if I order anything under $40.
I wait a few days and my nice brown package arrives. I eagerly open it up and find two (somewhat small) glass candles. I read the labels and of course get the typical, trim the wick stuff but I also read that this somewhat small candle has a burn time of 50 hours. Nice! Anyway, I can’t wait to light it and find out if it’s all that it’s cracked up to be.
The first thing I notice is the smell. It is absolutely fantastic! My whole room smelled like flowers within 5 minutes. After I see that there is a little bit of melted wax I find myself getting excited. I follow the instructions and blow out the wick before I pour the liquid. After my past experience with melted candle wax, I am careful to pour the liquid into my hand before I pour it on my boyfriends back. It feels a little warm but not unbearable so I smooth it over his skin. WOW! It is actually a really nice sensation even on my hands, I can only imagine how good it feels on his back! I start working it in and am happy to see that a little goes a long way. I was able to massage his whole back with just the little bit of liquid I poured into my hand. I was a little apprehensive about the staying power of the liquid. I thought that candle wax always turns back into, well, wax after it cools so I kept a close eye on it to see if I noticed any little flakes forming. I am happy to report that even the next morning, there were no flakes and my boyfriends back still felt like a baby’s butt.
A couple of days later my boyfriend walks into our bedroom and exclaims “Man, it smells nice in here, what is that?” To my surprise, the smell of the candle that I lit two days ago, is still smelling up our room very nicely. Bonus!!!
Finally I decide to use the candle as a lotion for myself since it seems it will be a while before I get to enjoy the massage aspect of it. After a shower I light the candle and let it burn for a few minutes before I blow it out again. I for some reason waited a minute or two before I poured the candle’s liquid into my hand. This time I notice that it is a bit cooler than it was the last time I poured it but I figured it would be alright. I put the lotion on my legs and again notice how nice and smooth the liquid feels only this time, those waxy little flakes appeared. Now I know it’s all about the timing. If you want to avoid that from happening, you pretty much need to use the candle’s liquid right away. From what I understand, soy candles burn a lot cooler than regular wax ones so they tend to start turning back into solid form a little quicker too.
Anyway, I have to say that this is one of the coolest products I have encountered this year. It smells great both during and a few days after burning, it is a fantastic massage oil, and when used quickly after burning, a great lotion. All of this and the price is right too. Two candles and shipping only cost me a little over $28. For those of you lucky enough to have a CVS in your neighborhood, you can just walk in and grab the Essence of Beauty candle right off of the shelf. I am sure that after you try it yourself, you will be as big of a fan as I am. For those men who are reading this, I can promise you that you will score some bonus points with your girlfriend/wife if you pick one of these up for her. Just be sure to give her the back rub at the end of the night.
