Talk about an April fools day prank, and at least locally easily at least today is the prank being broadcast live on Wink 106 radio station in downtown Elmira New York.
Thousands of people within their listening area are falling for this April fools day prank and few suspect anything because this is a trusted radio station locally.
In the coming days, perhaps even tonight we will find out what radio personality is behind the April fools day prank. Could it be Scott or Ally of the wake up crew who are on air weekdays between five and ten in the morning, these two are entertaining. On the other hand, perhaps it is one of the other much-loved amusing radio personalities of Wink 106.
I first heard of this April Fools Day caper from my 16 year old son, who proudly proclaimed with a laugh, ‘you will not be working today mom, unplug the computer’.
According to my son, Wink 106 said there was a computer thing and it would shut down our computers and sauté the motherboards. He went on to say it affects computers with modems and the high bandwidth connections alike, and he was anxious about our computers. I blew it off after he went to school and I thought he was pulling an April fools day prank on me, and I got started doing my research as a freelance writer on the internet.
My sister sends a text message to me informing me to turn off my computer and listen to Wink 106 today. This makes me wonder about the reality of this could it be true, or is it a big April Fools day prank? I began researching on the internet to see if there was any real warning about using a computer today.
Then my mom called me and asked if I had gotten my sister’s message about the computer and the radio station’s message, I told my mom I was researching it. It is funny I have talked to 6 people above the age of 16 today and three have mentioned this, and of the other three neither was listening to Wink 106.
I turned my son’s radio up so that I could listen to Wink 106, so I can hear the exact message, I realized quickly it is the best April fools day prank, and it is very reminiscent of the War of the world radio broadcast of so long ago.
Below is a copy of an email I wrote and quickly sent off to the radio station, letting them know I knew about the April fools day prank.
Good prank you have going today. I am an IT pro and a freelance writer. I am doing a story on you, will be posting it later today, and would love to include comment from any of you personalities who wish to comment.
I work from my home as a freelance writer on the internet, and I would love to do a story on this April fools day prank. I have already done my research and I see no other warnings out here, but I am keeping your secret from a host of family and friends who are calling me and sending text messages asking if this is real. I think this is funny; you have so many people down here in the Athens and Sayre areas fooled. With them staying off the internet, I am thinking yeah more bandwidth for me, and they are not filling my e-boxes with more useless forwards!
I am listening to your station, and singing along as I continue to work writing my freelance pieces today, as I always do. Thanks for being here for many others and me as we go about our daily lives.
At almost 10am on April fools day, I received an email response from the Margaret Tollner, the general manger of Wink 106, who thanked me for writing and wrote she was glad I thought it was funny but mentioned some people did not. I guess those who did not think it was funny have no sense of humor. Perhaps more people ought to use the internet to research important items rather then play games, send email and chat with other people.
At noon after she was, relaxing after the busy morning show Ally from Wink 106 herself replied to my email. She said she was glad I found their April Fools day prank as funny as they did, and added she hoped it enjoyed the faster internet. Yes Ally, I did and my e-box was not filling up with spam either! The April fools day prank was priceless!
When I talked to Ray about this prank, he told me about a radio station in Australia whose morning show hosts played an April Fools day prank as well. In that April Fools day prank they hosts said it was actually an hour later then it really was, the result many people showed up at work an hour early. Those Aussie’s sure know have fun, just like the morning show team of Scott and Ally on Wink 106 Elmira in upstate New York.
