When it comes to natural beauty, every one has their own opinions. Some people enjoy looking at seascapes while others prefer mountains and still others marvel at deserts. If you are searching for that perfect scenic drive for a weekend getaway or to top off a vacation with then it is important for you to look for a drive that will take you past scenery that you enjoy. Below are ten suggestions for the best scenic drives in the United States.
Scenic Drive No. 1: Seward Highway, Alaska
If you happen to be way up north in Alaska then you will not want to miss the drive along the Seward Highway. This 127 mile route will take you from Anchorage to Seward. Along this ride you will see cliffs, whales, wildlife, waterfalls, the Chugach National Forest and scenery that is commonly used by the Alaskan Department of Tourism to attract visitors.
Scenic Drive No. 2: Zion National Park Scenic Byway, Utah
Between April and October is the best time to drive through Zion National Park. This route will take you past rock formations and scenery that has made this national park famous. For example, you will see cliffs that stretch 2,000 to 3,000 feet into the air, amazing reds and orange rock formations and lots of wildlife. Note: If you travel to the park during the summer months you will have to take the park’s guided bus tour to travel on this route as visitor’s cars will not be allowed on the scenic byway.
Scenic Drive No. 3: Going-To-The-Sun Road, Montana
One of my favorite scenic drives is the Going-to-the-Sun Road located in Glacier National Park. This 50 mile route will take you from St. Mary to Apgar. You will be able to travel this road from June to about the middle of October, however, snow storms can close the road at any time. After you pay your park admission, you will be able to travel up this road and see glaciers, mountains, wildlife, forests, and even cross over the Continental Divide. If you are afraid of heights have someone else drive for you.
Scenic Drive No. 4: Skyline Drive, Virginia
If you are looking for photo opportunities then the Skyline Drive in Virginia is for you. This 105 mile long scenic drive offers you over 75 different overlooks that you can pull off the road and take a picture. This drive can add to the enjoyment of your visit to the Shenandoah National Park.
Scenic Drive No. 5: Sea Islands, Georgia
For drivers traveling through the American South, consider the Sea Islands scenic drive in Georgia. This route will take you from Jekyll Island to Savannah. Along this year long route you will see marshes, water, beaches, whales (in the winter), birds and wildlife.
Scenic Drive No. 6: California 1, California
Seascape aficionados are going to love the California 1 scenic drive. This 123 mile long scenic drive will take you from Monterey to Morro Bay. This route is open year round and offers you a chance to see California scenery at its best.
Scenic Drive No. 7: Hana Highway, Maui, Hawaii
For those of you lucky enough to make it to Hawaii, you will not want to miss a drive along the Hana Highway. This 50 mile scenic highway will take you from Paia to Hana. Along the way you will experience some tricky driving situations such as hundreds of hairpin curves and over 50 single lane bridges, however, the journey is worth it. You will travel through some of the most beautiful scenery in North America.
Scenic Drive No. 8: Texas Hill Country
For a more rugged drive try the route from Medina to Garner State Park. This Texas scenic drive will take you along a 46 mile long trek through three river valleys, past rugged Texas scenery and give you a glimpse of the Old West.
Scenic Drive No. 9: The Million-Dollar Highway, Colorado
Colorado is known for its beautiful scenery and the Million-Dollar Highway will take you through some of the best that Colorado has to offer. This is a 75 mile long journey along US Route 550 that will take you from Silverton to Oury. You will pass a collapsed volcano, Uncompahgre Gorge, waterfalls and Colorado wildlife.
Scenic Drive No. 10: Napa Valley and Sonoma
If you happen to be in the mood for a scenic drive along vineyards then travel to Northern California. Here you will find a 132 mile long scenic drive that will take you from Santa Rosa, California to Hopland. On your journey you will pass by vineyards, lakes, state parks, forests, woods and some of the most romantic countryside in the world.
