This is something I think everyone should try to do. It will help you remember wonderful and unique events in your life. But remember, bad memories will also be brought back as well. Writing your autobiography will be something that you can pass on to future generations about some of life’s experiences and lessons you have learned . Before you start to write you’ll need to be sure you have all your facts in hand.
RESEARCH. First, a good idea is to buy yourself index cards and begin by remembering the different times in your life. Record a single event on each index card in a single sentence or phrase. Then add the date if you can remember it. Ask yourself questions that will jog your memory such as “where was I born?” or “Where did I grow up?”. Keep a notebook, index cards, or a tape recorder (which I prefer) handy at all times – just in case you remember something. Also, smells will often evoke recollections. For instance, roses might help you remember something a about a particular time in your life. Gather information from relatives and friends about the past, look through old photo albums, and review family record books.
ORGANIZE. Organize all of your materials by milestones such as birthdays, graduations, weddings and even job changes. Arrange the facts and create an outline for your story by using two ways to organize. Chronological-proceed in sequence. Each chapter of your life should be grouped in 10 year periods. And by subject. Group into categories such as education, romance, career, travel, raising children , etc. Keep the reader in mind make sure the events flow logically from one to the other.
WRITE. If you can use a computer it will check your spelling and grammar. It also has features that allow you to easily refine your draft. Start with the earliest memories you have. Remember, if your parents are alive they can fill you in on alot of early events that you can not remember. Also, siblings are a great help in this area as well. Then you’ll move into childhood memories and on into the teenage to adult years. Always write about the most special times in your life, such as your wedding day, the birth of your child, your first kiss etc.. These are your most precious memories that will be passed on through generations.
EDIT. After writing your autobiography, make sure you read it over several times. You will see several things that probably will need to be changed. You can get help with grammar and style by using reference books or a good dictionary that will provide you with guidance in terms of spelling and punctuation. A great one is Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary this includes a handbook of style among its sections. Also, the library is full of books on this subject to give you
many helpful ideas.
PUBLISH. Once you have written your story, consider publishing it. You can do that with print-on-demand (POD) technology which is available from POD self
publishing companies. Another company is called WordWright.biz . This company specializes in helping new authors write, publish, and distribute their stories. They can also publish as few as just 25 copies for family and friends.
